Roman McConn, a remarkable seven-year-old, has spearheaded an incredible initiative known as Project Freedom Ride, dedicated to saving dogs from euthanasia in shelters nationwide. Despite his young age, Roman’s passion for animal welfare has led to the rescue of over one thousand dogs.
The genesis of Project Freedom Ride came in 2015, when Roman and his mother adopted a dog from a shelter. Through this experience, Roman became aware of the heartbreaking fate that awaited many shelter dogs. Determined to make a difference, he began creating videos to promote shelter dog adoptions.
Inspired by Roman’s dedication, his mother advocated for legislative measures to prohibit euthanasia in shelters. Together, they conceived the idea of an underground railroad to transport at-risk dogs to safety. In 2016, Project Freedom Ride was born, and their inaugural mission transported 31 dogs from Texas to Washington.
Presently, Project Freedom Ride continues its mission, transporting approximately 50 dogs at a time. However, the project is more than just transportation; it’s a collaborative effort to connect Texas shelter dogs with new homes and rescues in the Pacific Northwest.
For Roman, the joy of saving these dogs is immeasurable. He finds fulfillment in knowing that he’s made a difference in their lives, and the happiness of the dogs themselves serves as a testament to the project’s success. Despite relocating to Augusta, Georgia, Roman and his mother remain steadfast in their commitment to Project Freedom Ride. Their unwavering determination ensures that their mission to save dogs from euthanasia continues to thrive.
